EMDR and Trauma-Informed Therapy

Sometimes people remember past events more often than they want. Emotions can become strong and negative thoughts can swirl in their minds. Some things that happen are very traumatic like having a house burn down, being in a bad car accident, or losing someone close to them. Some things are not so big, but still carry strong memories. They can leave people feeling anxious or depressed. Big or small memories that trigger strong emotions are stored in the wrong place in the brain. Memories can be reprocessed so that they no longer cause big emotional responses. The memories are not erased but are released from the power that they hold. People generally feel happier and more relaxed following EMDR therapy and continue to feel better long after therapy is completed. More information about EMDR can be found at www.emdria.org.

  • EMDR allows clients to effectively process past traumatic experiences

  • EMDR enables clients to better cope with current situations that trigger dysfunctional emotions

  • EMDR allows clients to gain important cognitive insights that usually result in spontaneous behavioral and personal change
